In 1968, telecommunication technicians at the automatic telephone exchange in Buea began putting aside part of their income through a traditional "Njangi" savings group. In November 1971, that group was authorised to launch as a Credit Union — the Buea P&T Cooperative Credit Union.
Since then, BPTCCUL has grown into one of the most trusted financial institutions in the region — registered with CamCCUL, accredited by MINFI and COBAC, and in 2018 became the first Credit Union in Fako to receive a CENADI code, allowing it to pay civil servant salaries directly.
